Overseeding is the process by which new grass seed is planted within existing turf.Overseeding is an effective approach to revitalizing aged or unhealthy lawns. New seed varieties are more resilient to insects, disease, drought, shade, traffic, etc. There are many different methods for overseeding a lawn, one of the most effective being slice seeding (a.k.a. slit-seeding) whereby a mechanical device with verticutting blades is used to create ¼ inch slits in the soil where seed is dropped. Slice seeding allows more seed to get into the soil where it can germinate rather than get caught in the thatch layer. My Greenskeeper employs a slice seeding approach to overseeding. We perform the process by making two passes through your lawn at 45 degree angles to each other which results in the seed being placed in the soil at a maximum of two inches apart. The benefits of slice seeding will be apparent both in the appearance of your lawn and the need for less watering. We perform this service in the fall. Contact us to discuss incorporating this worthwhile service into your overall lawn care program. |
